Dick Gumshoe is the only active detective associate of Phoenix in the first 3 games of the series. He first makes his appearance in Case 2 of the very first game. He is also known as Keisuke Itonokogiri in the japanese version of the game.

Gumshoe is characterised as a chump, and is clearly not the brightest bulb in the box. But putting that aside and you have a hard worker who takes his job in utmost seriousness, he takes pride in his work as a valued member of the police department and also shares a "strong bond of trust" with the prosecutor's officer, and is more in association within this bond towards Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth.

Gumshoe usually ends his sentences with "Pal.", alongside his name presents the concept of the typical detective stereotype. "Dick" is a slang reference to his being a detective and "Gumshoe" yet again slang, used to describe a person whose work is investigating crimes and obtaining hidden evidence. Gumshoe adores steak lunches, and also invented the Blue badger; the apparent icon of the police department.
