Phoenix Wright (otherwise known as Naruhodou Ryuuichi in the Japanese versions of the game) is the main protagonist in the first three games of the Ace Attorney series. He had the ambition of becoming a defense lawyer when he was younger; accompanied with the belief of standing up for the suffering, in other words "standing up for those who have no one else on their side".

The reason for this ambition would resort back to a childhood memory he had kept as a reminiscent to his new found profession. He is also mentee to Mia Fey, whom had taken him as a new addition to her law office as his boss and mentor, and has a dedication to fighting for the "not guilty" verdict for his clients, who are usually accused of and put on trial for the commission of a murder.

Phoenix is spontaneously easy-going, however said to be hot-headed in his ability to calculate a situation, moving head-first with what he would set his mind on and not willing to back away from it. He has a sarcastic side that he keeps to himself, which we often see while he's thinking, namely following those whom we know is uttering something of a ridiculous nature.

His casual disposition often has him being lead around by other people. He has a deep loyalty to his friends, even if they are the ones who normally are responsible for leading him around.
